Struggling to Write after Moving
I’ve been struggling to write. I’m currently on the second draft of my Vampire Horror-Erotica, Stagnant Water. I’m cutting myself a little slack; I moved at the end of January and am still unpacking and settling into a new routine. I don’t have a defined writing space like I did before, and though I am keeping my 5 a.m. routine, I’ve struggled to focus in my allotted window. Additionally, I’ve been planning a wedding, sending out invitations, and trying out a new diet.
I guess it’s not surprising that I’ve been struggling to focus on my craft.
This morning was my first day of getting out words (800 words) in two weeks. A part of my issue is my perception of time. A few days feels like an eternity to me. When I miss my writing window, I feel like I’ve been off the ball forever.
There isn’t much more to this than a good venting session. For advice, get a good day planner and write down your word count for the day. That way when you feel like you haven’t gotten a win, you can look back and see how you’ve been doing.
Keeping a Writing Habit during a move:
Pack your writing tools in one (however many you need) clearly labeled box
Pick and define your new writing space ASAP
If you have a time window, keep showing up even if you can’t write
Be kind to yourself. It's exhausting to move and the adjustment takes time.
If you are having trouble getting words down, take some time to look at a calendar and your plot. Check your deadlines (all mine are self-imposed) and double-check what needs to be worked on for your book.
Remember, we write because we love it. Go easy on yourself.
